Being tired is one thing, but looking worn out even when you’re not is a whole other kind of dreadful. Some people have genetics to thank for the dark circles under their eyes and others notice that the skin under their eyes becomes sallow with age. The sad truth is most of us lose volume in the fat pads beneath our eyes at one point or another, leaving us looking like we just pulled an all-nighter even when we’re getting a solid eight hours. Topical treatments can have some effect but filler under the eyes uses collagen to stimulate the appearance of thicker fats pads beneath your skin making it the most effective way to get rid of dark circles, hollowness and wrinkles.

WHY DO PEOPLE GET UNDER EYE DERMAL FILLERS?

Dark circles and hollowness under the eyes can be caused by a number of factors and we’ve detailed the main culprits below:

GENETICS

Some people are born with less fat in the under-eye area which causes an indentation called a tear-trough hollow. Lighter skin is more prone to sagging under the eyes as well.

FACIAL STRUCTURE

Your tear trough follows a semicircular arc from the inner corner of your eye to the palpebromalar groove. Having a deep tear trough can cause a shadow underneath your eye that looks like the black circles you get when you haven’t slept.

Another structural cause of hollowed eyes is tear trough deformity, wherein the fat pads beneath the eyes are thinner than normal. Surgery to reposition the fat in the lower eyelid is an option but fillers are a less invasive (and lasting), alternative.

LIFESTYLE

For those of us without genetically or structurally deep tear troughs, dark circles are an unavoidable by-product of environmental exposure and other lifestyle elements. Everyone has a natural valley under their eyes and eventually (and sadly) most of us will experience dark circles at some point in our lives. Dark circles are also exacerbated by things like sun exposure, allergies, dehydration and (not surprisingly) sleep.

NATURAL AGING

When our tissues go through senescence (or cellular aging) the cells that are turned over aren’t as robust as they used to be. As a result, we lose volume and tissue laxity in our lower eyelids and the tear trough looks more prominent. At the same time, the fat pads that line your lower eye deteriorate and drop, causing the skin to sag and the leaving the space looking hollow. The collagen ingredients used in dermal fillers can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and add fullness back to your eyes.

WHAT DO DERMAL FILLERS DO?

Tear trough filler such as Belotero Balance, Restylane Silk and Juvederm Ultra correct the orbital hollowing caused by a loss of volume or for those who have a naturally deep trough. Filler under the eyes makes the skin appear thicker and as if it has more volume—reducing the appearance of dark circles, shadows and depressions. These injections will last anywhere from 6-12 months, with the average being about 9.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PROCEDURE

Getting dermal filler under eyes is a virtually painless experience, that takes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and has very little downtime.

If you please, a topical numbing agent can be used to soothe the injection site. Your skin care professional will assess the tear trough and mark out the area to be treated. Your skin will be cleansed and a very small needed is placed beneath the skin for the filler to be injected. For filler under eyes, you’re looking at an average of 3-5 injections per side. Your professional might softly massage the area to smooth and even the filler beneath the skin. It’s recommended that you ice the area and avoid working out for at least a day.

For thin and light-skinned patients, you will likely receive Belotero under eyes because it doesn’t cause the tindle effect (a bluish hue that can be seen through the skin). For those with darker skin this isn’t an issue so Restylane or Juvederm are the preferred options and tend to last longer.

SIDE EFFECTS

Most commonly, tear trough filler can cause bruising, swelling and temporary discomfort. Very rarely, fillers can be accidentally injected into a blood vessel which can lead to scarring and tissue damage. But these cases only represent 0.0001% of all injections worldwide.

ARE YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE?

There are multiple topical products out there that might help with the appearance of minor sallowness beneath the eyes as well as discoloration and crows feet. But when a loss of volume is the culprit behind that hollowed-out effect, eye fillers are the most effective solution.

Keep in mind though that dermal fillers might not be right for your facial structure – the position of your orbital rim in relation to your tear trough is an important consideration. Your skin care professional should consider this when determining whether you’re a good candidate for filler under the eyes.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you find yourself looking tired even when you’re getting enough water and rest, the loss of volume under your eyes might be the reason behind it. Dermal fillers under eyes replace the loss of fat and fill in the lower eyelid area to make your skin plump, supple and younger-looking.
