SLS & SLES
More and more, we’re noticing shampoos, soaps and body washes with an SLS (sodium lauryl Sulfate & sodium laureth Sulfate) or SLES-free label on it. These inexpensive foaming agents are what make your body wash lather, but the EWG has marked them as highly toxic. They’re associated with irritation of the skin, eyes, and lungs, there’s a moderate concern that they can cause organ system toxicity and hormone disruption, and they’ve even been associated with cancer.
TRICLOSAN
If your fave body wash is of the anti-bacterial or antifungal sort, check the label for this ingredient. Technically banned by the FDA in 2016, the ban only impacts antibacterial soaps that are considered over-the-counter drugs, not traditional soaps, so it’s still found in over 2,000 products. It’s been linked to immunotoxicity, cardiovascular issues, and lower testosterone levels, among others negative health consequences.
FRAGRENCE
How does your body wash make you smell so fresh and clean? If it’s fragrance, you’re in trouble. Although fragrance is listed as one ingredient on your label, it can actually be made up of a combination of hundreds of chemicals – and manufacturers don’t have to tell you what those chemicals are because they’re protected under trade secret laws. FORMALDEHYDE & FORMALDEHYDE RELEASING PRESERVATIVESÂ

This stuff is associated with allergic skin reactions at their best and cancer at their worst. Avoid all of these ingredients to be safe: Formalin, Formic Aldehyde, Merthaldehyde, Methanal, Methyl Aldehyde, Oxomethane, Oxymethylen, Quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantoin Imidazolidinyl Urea, Diazolidinyl Urea, and Polyoxymethylene Urea.
PHENOXYETHANOL
Used as a preservative that limits bacterial growth and as a stabilizer in both perfumes and soaps (aka body wash), phenoxyethanol is a skin, eye, and lung irritant. It’s been linked to reactions ranging from eczema to severe and life-threatening allergic reactions, up to and including shutdown of the central nervous system, and that’s some scary stuff. Of course, once word gets out about how dangerous this stuff is, manufacturers start to change how they name it in their ingredient list, which is why you’ll find that phenoxyethanol is also listed as 2-Phenoxyethanol, Euxyl K 400, and PhE.
